Workers at the Port of Brisbane will soon have an even safer and more direct drive to work as major construction gets underway on the $110 million Port Drive Upgrade project.
Port of Brisbane Pty Limited (PBPL) Chief Operating Officer, Peter Keyte said the road upgrades will deliver safer and more efficient port roads for the 3.1 million vehicles that travel on them every year.
“These upgrades are about future-proofing Queensland’s biggest multi-cargo port,” said Mr Keyte.
“We are bringing forward these works ahead of demand to ensure we have the safest and most efficient roads to support the port as it continues to grow.”
Last year, approximately $50 billion in trade was handled through the Port of Brisbane, which has experienced a decade of growth.
The project’s design and construction contract was awarded to Seymour Whyte Constructions in July 2016. It involves the duplication of Port Drive – the major road in and out of the port – and duplication of the Lucinda Drive Bridge. It also includes the construction a four-lane overpass over the Kite Street roundabout at the Port’s entrance, making that section of road safer for the heavy vehicles and trucks travelling onto Fisherman Islands.
Throughout the upgrade works, access will be maintained and in some cases improved to areas enjoyed by the local community such as the local boat ramp, the Moreton Island ferry terminal and the port’s Visitors Centre.
To date PBPL has worked closely with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) to finalise project planning, design and progress the early works on site, and will continue to collaborate with DTMR to progress the project.
The Port Drive project is expected to be completed mid-2018, weather and site conditions permitting.
