Progress on the Joondalup Health Campus Development Stage 2 Project is advancing with the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) tender awarded to Multiplex.
Ramsay Health Care and Multiplex will work together to further develop the design of the works which include documenting the timing and sequencing, construction methodology, staging and agreed costing.
The appointment of Multiplex will allow the continued development of the detailed design, which has been informed using feedback from various clinical experts within the hospital, as well as consumers.
Ramsay Health Care and Multiplex will present an ECI proposal to the State Government in the second quarter of 2021 and, if accepted, the project will move into the construction phase.
The entire build is expected to be completed by late 2025.
The total cost of the expansion project is estimated at $256.7 million, of which the Commonwealth has committed $158 million under the Western Australian Hospital Infrastructure Package.
The first package of early works will involve the creation of a new 12-bay Infectious Diseases Unit within the emergency department (ED). This will increase the hospital’s capability to safely manage patients with infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
The early works package will also involve the creation of a three-bay Behaviour Assessment Urgent Care Clinic within the ED. This will be designed and appropriately staffed to safely care for patients who are affected behaviourally, including those who are affected by drugs and alcohol.
The project is on-track, following the relocation of the ED’s administration offices in November.
The full expansion comprises:
- A new mental health building, including 30 new acute mental health inpatient beds;
- 12 new emergency department patient bays;
- A Behaviour Assessment Urgent Care Clinic;
- 90 inpatient beds in a design to meet future demand;
- Six new critical care beds;
- Increased parking bays for members of the public and staff; and
- A new operating theatre and cardiac catheter laboratory.
Health Minister Roger Cook detailed that the design of the new 12-bay infectious diseases unit was informed by the hospital’s experience last year in caring for 42 COVID positive patients.
“This unit will be extremely useful for any future infection outbreaks in Western Australia. It equips Joondalup Health Campus with an appropriate facility to rapidly limit spread and protect others whilst providing high-quality emergency care to the affected individual,” Minister Cook said.
“The unit will be set up with negative airflow as well as two dedicated negatively pressured isolation rooms, features which really enhance the safety of staff and other patients.”
“In addition, the creation of a new Behaviour Assessment Urgent Care Clinic will create a calmer environment for other patients within the main ED and provide the specialised attention that is required by people who are affected behaviourally, violent or aggressive,” he commented.
“Over the lifetime of this project, hundreds of jobs will be created – both during the construction phase and beyond,” the Minister added.
