The Victorian government has announced plans to revitalise a famous Albert Park landmark, transforming it into a modern restaurant and function centre.

The Point, a beloved site known for its spectacular views across Albert Park Lake, will be leased to the Australian Venue Company (AVC) for a long-term period.

Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos revealed that AVC will invest $3.4 million to reopen the venue as the Albert Park Lake House.

The ground floor will feature a casual bistro with a balcony overlooking the parkland, lake, and Melbourne CBD skyline.

The first level will be dedicated to functions and events, catering to group celebrations, corporate events, and weddings.

For decades, The Point housed a renowned restaurant celebrated for its fine dining, regularly featuring in The Age Good Food Guide.

The new development aims to create a welcoming centre of dining, hospitality, and community in the heart of Albert Park, serving families, corporations, visitors, and locals alike.

The Victorian government continues to invest in Albert Park’s facilities, recognising its importance as a beloved recreational space for Melbourne residents.

Recent investments include:

  • $1.6 million for solar panels on community sports club facilities
  • Annual funding for sports clubs through the Albert Park Sports Grants program
  • A new pavilion at Oval One

Additionally, a $5 million federal government investment will deliver upgrades to changerooms, sports fields, and sailing infrastructure, further encouraging sporting and recreational activities in the park.

VIC Minister Dimopoulos stated: “Home to the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, and several grassroots sports competitions, Albert Park is one of Melbourne’s most iconic sport and recreational parks.

“We have invested in modern facilities that create even more opportunities for Victorians to enjoy Albert Park.”

Member for Albert Park Nina Taylor added: “The Point is an Albert Park icon and has a bright future ahead for Victorians to enjoy and celebrate.

“We are investing in Albert Park to bring out the best our local community has to offer, from restaurants to sporting facilities and recreational activities.”

Renovations are expected to begin later this year or early 2026, with the venue anticipated to open its doors by mid-2026.

The transformation of the Albert Park Lake House is part of a broader effort to enhance Albert Park’s facilities and preserve its status as a premier destination for recreation, sport, and community engagement.
