Geelong welcomes $120 million waterfront hotel

Geelong welcomes $120 million waterfront hotel

The new $120 million Crowne Plaza Geelong has officially opened on the city’s waterfront, introducing a 200-room hotel designed to complement the region’s evolving tourism, business, and events landscape.

The new-build property represents a major milestone in Geelong’s development pipeline, aligning closely with the forthcoming Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre to create a new accommodation and events hub for the city.

Built to showcase Geelong’s coastal character while delivering modern functionality, the 10-storey Crowne Plaza Geelong was delivered through a partnership led by developer Plenary Group alongside IHG Hotels & Resorts, the City of Greater Geelong, and local collaborators.

The project emphasised design integration with the surrounding foreshore precinct, reflecting the city’s broader waterfront revitalisation strategy.

General Manager of Crowne Plaza Geelong, John Dickson, said the opening marked a key moment for the property and the local community.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be opening the doors to Crowne Plaza Geelong today. To launch at a time when the city is buzzing with major events and welcoming visitors from near and far is incredibly exciting,” John said.

“The Crowne Plaza brand is centred around bringing people together, whether they are travelling for sport, business or leisure, or meeting locally to dine and connect.

“From day one, our focus has been on creating a hotel that feels connected to Geelong, its waterfront and its community.

“Seeing the hotel come to life with a full house during opening week is exactly what we hoped for.”

Architecturally, the property presents a refined coastal aesthetic, combining warm textures, muted natural tones, and modern detailing to create a sense of calm throughout its interiors.

Guest rooms and suites are designed to maximise outlooks, with city or bay views framed by floor-to-ceiling windows.

Interior fit-outs feature sustainable finishes and local craftsmanship, complemented by commissioned art from regional artist Kate Robertson.

Her series of nine photographic works, reproduced as more than 450 framed pieces, are displayed across guest rooms and public areas, drawing inspiration from native flora planted within the hotel and adjacent conference centre gardens.

Public spaces have been designed for flexibility and local engagement.

The hotel’s eight event spaces provide natural light and direct waterfront views, catering to conferences, meetings, and private functions.

Each has been designed with acoustic performance and layout adaptability in mind, accommodating small-scale meetings through to large gatherings.

Food and beverage venues also play a structural role in the building’s layout.

Verde on Smythe, a ground-floor café, activates the street frontage, while Sociali Trattoria & Bar on the first level introduces a neighbourhood dining atmosphere with open-kitchen transparency.

The Skyline Bar, positioned on level 10, anchors the building’s upper levels and features an exterior glazing system that opens to bay panoramas, reinforcing a connection between the hotel and its coastal setting.

Plenary Group CEO Paul Crowe said the project exemplifies effective collaboration between private and public sectors.

“Projects like this come to life through strong collaboration, and we’ve been proud to work alongside IHG, the City of Greater Geelong and local stakeholders to deliver a hotel that complements the city’s vision for its waterfront.

“Crowne Plaza Geelong is the result of that shared commitment, and the hotel will play a key role in supporting Geelong’s growing visitor economy, providing the quality accommodation needed to attract and host national and international audiences so they can enjoy Geelong and this amazing region.”

Opening in time for the summer season, Crowne Plaza Geelong also marks the brand’s first regional Victorian property.

The project forms part of Geelong’s broader waterfront transformation, which is expected to include new dining, retail, and mixed-use developments over the coming years.
