Victoria’s Flinders Street Station will be seen in a whole new light following the unveiling of a new state-of-the-art colourful LED lighting system. Approximately 200,000 individuals use the station each day.
The carefully positioned lights will show off the building’s exterior decorations, creating depth and a spectacular display. The light installation forms a part of the government’s $100 Million upgrade of the station. 1100 lights are connected through more than 20 kilometres of cable that allows the system to be completely automated and controlled remotely.
Each of the lights is connected through over 20 kilometres of cable, allowing the system to be completely automated and controlled remotely. The lights are connected by their own internal microprocessor, making Flinders Street Station, Australia’s oldest station (and heritage listed building), the most technologically advanced.
“Flinders St has been the face of Melbourne for more than a century – and our works will protect the station for the next hundred years,” announced Minister for Major Projects, Jacinta Allan.
“The new light system is the finishing touch of an exterior restoration that leaves the station looking as fresh as it did when it opened in 1910.”
The launch of the light installation completes the restoration of the Flinders Street Station’s exterior ‘revamp’ which has seen the repainting of the building in its original colours, a leaking roof fixed, and the clock tower and dome interiors restored. Other projects currently underway as a part of the government’s Flinders Street Station makeover include the restoration of the Degraves and Elizabeth Street subways, improvements to the main ticket hall and increased passenger seating.
