The Adelaide Central Market Authority has announced a rare opportunity for food and hospitality businesses to join one of the world’s top produce markets as part of a major expansion project set to be completed in 2026.
The expansion will double the size of the existing market, increasing the total number of tenancies to 123 across 6,760 square metres of lettable retail space.
The project will create up to 53 new tenancies, comprising traditional market-style stalls, kiosks for food and beverage outlets, and perimeter store tenancies for dining and retail experiences.
Adelaide Central Market Authority Chairman Theo Maras emphasised the significance of this expansion, stating: “We’ve got one of the best markets in the world and this expansion will strengthen our position as a global food and cultural destination, showcasing the outstanding local produce and the fantastic small businesses we have within South Australia.”
The expanded market is part of the larger $400 million Market Square development, a joint venture between the City of Adelaide and ICD Property.
This mixed-use precinct will include 234 boutique apartments, complementary retail and supermarket space, nine floors of premium commercial office space, and Australia’s first 248-room Treehouse Hotel.
Fabienne Reilly, Adelaide Central Market Authority General Manager, highlighted the criteria for potential tenants: “We’re looking for passionate food and beverage businesses that share our commitment to quality, innovation, and community spirit.”
The expansion plans include reinstating the original east-west pedestrian access to Victoria Square and creating new areas such as The Laneway and the grand Market Hall.
These additions are designed to enhance the market experience and provide space for events and pop-up activities.
Currently, the Adelaide Central Market is fully leased, with existing traders expressing excitement about the growth opportunities the expansion will bring.
The market, which currently attracts over eight million visitors annually, is projected to see an increase to 10 million visitors per year upon completion of the expansion.
Interested businesses have until August 31 to submit their Expressions of Interest for this unique opportunity to be part of one of the southern hemisphere’s largest and most renowned fresh produce markets.
