The potential for rational management to spread improvements to health and safety practices widely has been a boon for Liberty OneSteel topping most categories in this year’s National Health and Safety Excellence Awards.
The winners were presented by awards sponsor, AustralianSuper at the Gala Dinner of the Australian Steel Convention on the Gold Coast on 19 September.
Under the stewardship of the Individual Practitioner winner, National Safety Manager Paul Burnell, OneSteel’s Metalcentre business reached a record 215 days without lost time due to injury (LTI) during 2016.
The nationwide Metalcentre business also attracted the top honour in the Improvement Initiative category with its Overhead Magnet Crane Team eliminating frequent drops from magnet cranes through a detailed process to identify appropriate loading at all locations.
Logistics Supervisor Nik Westbury’s diligence in cultivating a responsible safety culture at OneSteel Rod & Bar at Laverton in Victoria, which has improved efficiencies and saved costs over recent years, earned him the top spot in the Individual category.
In the Outstanding Site/Department category, GAM Steel won particularly for installing structured operator walkways that have eliminated trip hazards during operational activities.
This year under the Safety Logistics Awards program sponsored by Signode, the ASI introduced a second category to the Steel Transport Supplier of the Year accolade to open more opportunity to recognise responsible practice in that sector with Small to Medium as well as Large Carrier categories contested.
TOLL topped the Large Carrier stakes for demonstrating high achievement in its Victorian operations accessing and addressing impacts across multitude of operations in rail, road and sea freight with greater focus on loading and transport.
Small to Medium Carrier winner, Russell Transport attracted praise for developing a system that allows operators easier access to restrain loads on articulated trailers that has significantly reduced personnel injuries.
