A major housing boost is on the way for Queenslanders as the QLD government announces the proposed North Harbour Priority Development Area (PDA) in Burpengary East, City of Moreton Bay, unlocking more than 3,700 new homes over the next 15 years.
The new PDA, fast-tracked after a decade of delays under the previous government, will immediately release land for around 200 homes, with detailed planning for the remainder to follow in collaboration with the City of Moreton Bay, local community, and developers.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jarrod Bleijie, said the move would cut red tape and accelerate housing supply.
“The Crisafulli government has proposed this priority development area to kick-start housing supply and get more Queenslanders into homes sooner,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.
“We are unlocking land to deliver more housing for Queenslanders, while funding critical infrastructure and axing stamp duty for first homeowners on new builds.
“While Labor tied up builders and councils in red tape, we’re resetting the planning partnership with local councils and communities to deliver new housing in the right locations.”
The North Harbour PDA is set to become a major economic driver for the region, supporting the development of a new marina precinct, retail, tourism, and hotel facilities, alongside new housing options.
The project is expected to generate almost 2,000 jobs and inject $456 million into the local economy.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery welcomed the announcement, stating: “The construction of apartments and standalone housing will further boost the economy and provide another option for people looking to live in City of Moreton Bay.
“The development of a marina at the site will unlock a new local marine industry, from boatbuilding to repairs, generating more skilled employment opportunities for our residents.”
The North Harbour PDA builds on an existing development already home to 3,000 residents and is recognised as a key project in the City of Moreton Bay Regional Economic Development Strategy 2020–2041.
The proposal follows the recent declaration of a new PDA in Southern Thornlands, which will unlock around 8,000 homes, and complements the government’s $2 billion Residential Activation Fund aimed at accelerating critical housing infrastructure across Queensland.
