The Government of Western Australia is seeking qualified experts to join the newly-established Western Australian State Design Review Panel, aiming to improve the design of future State buildings and infrastructure projects.
Chaired by Government Architect, Geoff Warn, the panel is seeking industry specialists in design, sustainability, heritage, accessibility, public health and master planning.
The panel forms a part of the State Government’s Design WA initiative which aims to put good design at the heart of all development and includes a design review guide, updated residential design codes and a State planning policy to guide the development of the built environment.
In announcing the request, Planning Minister, Rita Saffioti said that notions of design quality extend beyond taste, style and appearance to encompass functionality, sustainability and local context.
“We want developments that enhance the built environment and perform well for all users and the broader community,” she said.
“The WA State Design Review Panel will play a crucial role in guiding our design future and ensuring that new developments deliver benefits for all Western Australians. We have a wealth of talent in this area and I encourage anyone with suitable qualifications and skills to apply.”
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Planning, John Carey MLA, also commented that good design is instrumental in ensuring that Western Australia’s built environment is functional, sustainable, flexible and environmentally responsible.
“The panel will provide the community with the confidence that major development in existing suburbs can be done sensitively and in keeping with the location’s amenity, heritage and context. It will also help to progress a community dialogue on greater density and infill development that is needed to accommodate a significant population increase by 2050,” he said.
Expressions of interest close at 2pm on Friday, December 21, 2018.
