Enhancing construction productivity: ACA's vision for a data-driven future

The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) has released the final discussion paper in its Foundations and Frontiers series, focusing on enhancing productivity in the construction industry through smarter data utilisation and practical metrics.

Titled Data-rich future, the paper addresses the well-documented stagnation of construction productivity growth in Australia, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

ACA CEO Jon Davies emphasised that while current productivity metrics are complex and often inaccessible, this paper envisions a future where easily understandable measures can be used to benchmark and track performance improvements effectively.

Davies highlighted the untapped potential of data in the construction industry, stating: “Despite the wealth of data generated by construction projects — including engineering calculations, project costs, equipment usage and weather conditions — most of this information remains underutilised.:

He noted that this valuable data often ends up in obscure storage or is only referenced in contractual disputes, missing critical opportunities for process improvement, forecasting, and design refinement.

The paper proposes a transformative approach where historical and real-time data drive decision-making.

Davies explained: “Predicting project completion dates and costs with high accuracy, comparing design options quickly and effectively — these are just some of the opportunities in reach if we get this right.”

This discussion paper is part of the lead-up to the Foundations and Frontiers (FF24) forum, scheduled for August 8 in Sydney.

FF24 aims to be a catalyst for an industry-wide response to the most pressing issues facing Australia’s construction industry, providing a unique platform for all construction stakeholders to address the industry’s sustainability and collectively pave the way forward.

The release of this paper comes at a critical time for the construction industry, which is facing significant challenges including workforce shortages, stagnating productivity, and increasing costs.

The ACA, as the representative body for contractors delivering major infrastructure projects in Australia, is committed to creating a more sustainable construction industry.
