ICON Developments’ Cantala project in Victoria has been named best Medium Density Development at the prestigious Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) National Award for Excellence in the medium-density development category.
The Urban Development Institute of Australia’s National Awards for Excellence celebrates Australia’s contemporary knowledge, skills and innovation in the urban development industry. The awards recognise outstanding achievements of high quality developments.
Designed by architects SJB, this Cantala’s third award, taking out the UDIA Victorian Chapter award as well the Melbourne Design Awards in 2017. Comprising 25 multi-storey townhouses, a low-rise block of 44 apartments, basement carparking and the retention of a public landscaped thoroughfare through the site, Cantala marries the best of contemporary place-making and the aesthetics of leafy Melbourne.
ICON senior development manager Kyle Reeve says the team is proud of winning the national UDIA award for Cantala.
“We are extremely proud that Cantala has been appreciated at a national level. The award is recognition for the importance we place on creating communities within our developments, which is gratifying,” he says.
“At ICON we aim to deliver quality, design-led buildings, and the collaboration with SJB and the greater design team has been imperative to showcase what is possible with medium density development.”
SJB Director Tristan Wong says the award is a well-deserved win.
“Cantala is a great win for SJB. Projects like this continue to challenge us as designers, creating engaging built environments so that the cities and places we inhabit can continue to evolve, yet remain relevant and beautiful,” says Wong.
