Construction industry launch landmark guide to boost safety and standards

09 Mar, 2026
Queensland faces critical construction workforce shortage

The National Building Products Coalition (NBPC) has released the Good Practice Building Product Information Guide with the aim to restore confidence in Australia’s built environment.

This industry-led initiative marks a significant step in lifting transparency, accountability, and safety standards across the entire construction sector.

Developed by a collaboration of leading industry bodies – including Master Builders Australia, RICS, Standards Australia, and Engineers Australia – the Guide is a direct response to the Building Confidence Report and forms a core part of the National Building Product Assurance Framework.

The Good Practice Guide reflects a unified industry belief that raising the bar on product information is not just a regulatory necessity but a business imperative.

By adopting these high-standard behaviours, the NBPC estimates the sector can contribute to AU$2.4 billion in annual economic benefits.

Kevin Brogan, Chair of the RICS Australasia Regional Advisory Board, said: “This initiative is another important step towards increasing certainty and building a rigorous, well-understood system that supports a reliable product conformity regime consistent with the National Construction Code.”

The guide provides practical, voluntary tools designed to be integrated directly into business operations.

It is structured into two primary focus areas aimed at manufacturers and installers.

For specifiers and installers, the guide offers ‘Key Product Conformity Questions’ to ensure products are fit for purpose before they reach the site.

For manufacturers and suppliers, the guide provides a checklist of 12 key behaviours focused on providing credible, verifiable product claims.

The release is designed to work in tandem with the Building Product Information Traceability and Digitalisation Guide, also released this year. Together, these resources aim to modernise how data from performance claims to sustainability metrics is tracked and verified.

Supported by more than 20 major industry organisations, the guide offers a clear roadmap for manufacturers, builders, and regulators to lead the industry toward a safer and more sustainable future.
