State winners of the 2019 Cement Concrete & Aggregates (CCAA) Innovation Awards have just been revealed. The winners will now go on as finalists for the biennial National Awards in 2020.
The CCAA Innovation Awards aim to recognise innovation in the way industry manages aspects such as health and safety, the environment and community engagement.
State Winners were announced at dinners across the country throughout May, July and August. The events were attended by members, guests, government representatives, sponsors and industry.
At the 2019 Queensland CCAA Innovation Awards Dinner, Hanson Australia Pty Ltd was awarded the ‘Environmental Innovation Award’.
When an employee was unable to find a commercially available water treatment system suitable for the site conditions, they built one from recycled and repurposed materials on-site. The stormwater management system combines pump and sprinkler systems to distribute liquid flocculant through a network of block flocculant dispersal points. Costing less than $1,400.00, the system efficiently and effectively provides stormwater treatment at a low cost, and during a significant rain event, the system is able to substantially reduce sediments in just one day.
At the CCAA Innovation Awards Dinner in Tasmania, Duggans Pty Ltd secured the ‘Health and Safety Innovation Award’.
Larger and heavier pre-cast concrete panels can make the standard flat-bed trailers used for transport, top-heavy and potentially unstable. To address this problem, Duggans developed a low-slung trailer which carries the panels between the wheels significantly lowering the centre of gravity. A walkway structure was added to the trailer providing safe access for the rigger to the lifting pins, without having to use ladders or elevated platforms. A fleet of four trailers were modified, increasing road safety and reducing fall hazards at the project sites.
The judges set this nomination apart because not only were working at heights problems with the larger panels resolved, but road safety issues were also improved.
“An innovative win all round that can benefit safety across the wider precast concrete industry,” they said.
This year, for the first time ever, a new category was introduced into the awards program – Diversity & Inclusion – meaning it will also be celebrated for the first time at next year’s national awards. Nearly 140 entries were submitted across all states in this year’s round of awards, including 17 in the new category.
At the CCAA Innovation Awards Dinner in Western Australia, Holcim (Australia) took out the ‘Diversity & Inclusion Award’.
A brand new maternity range was recently added to Holcim’s Australian corporate and industrial workwear catalogue for expectant mothers. The new range includes hi-vis drill shirts, knit tops and pants all designed for an expectant mother.
