Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel) is a $1.7 billion SGD mixed-use development at Changi Airport in Singapore which transforms the centre of an airport into a world-class public realm attraction.
The 135,700 square metre development, built on the site of the former Terminal 1 open-air carpark, offers both local residents and international visitors a multi-faceted experience that includes attractions, over 280 retail stores and eateries, as well as airport and accommodation facilities.
Designed by a consortium comprising Safdie Architects, led by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, as well as architects from RSP Architects Planners and Engineers and Benoy, Jewel spans 10 storeys (five storeys above-ground and five basement storeys) and features a distinctive dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel.
The concept for Jewel was to be a destination where ‘the world meets Singapore, and Singapore meets the world’.
Ms Hung Jean, Chief Executive Officer, Jewel Changi Airport Devt, said that the unique proposition of world-class shopping and dining, seamlessly integrated with lush greenery, fulfils the needs of increasingly discerning travellers for a meaningful and experiential journey, even for brief layovers.
“Moreover, by providing innovative and fresh experiences for Singapore residents and working professionals in its vicinity, Jewel will invigorate Singapore’s eastern precincts and provide more opportunities for the public to enjoy time with family and friends.”
At Jewel’s core is Forest Valley, a terraced garden attraction surrounded by 2,000 trees and offerings of many spatial and interactive experiences.
Forest Valley boasts scenic walking trails, the majestic 40-metre HSBC Rain Vortex (the world’s tallest indoor waterfall), and quiet seating areas – a stark contrast from a traditional airport centre.
Jewel Changi Airport officially open to the public on 17 April 2019, but that’s not all that is in store for Jewel.
Canopy Park and Canopy Bridge are expected to open on 10 June 2019.
Nestled at the topmost level (Level 5), Canopy Park is a 14,000 square-metre world-class attraction, featuring unique offerings such as play attractions, gardens, walking trails and dining outlets in air-conditioned comfort.
Taking centre-stage are three first-of-its-kind play attractions – Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes and Discovery Slides – which have been specifically designed by leading consultants to blend into Jewel’s unique indoor garden environment.
Suspended 23 metres above ground, with a glass bottom at the centre portion for a gripping vantage point, Canopy Bridge is also sure to thrill and impress.
