The Western Australian government has unveiled 16 new social homes in Albany, marking a significant boost to affordable housing in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
The development, completed by local Albany builder Wauters Building Company, includes a mix of one and two-bedroom units across two locations.
In Yakamia, eight units have been constructed, comprising three two-bedroom, one-bathroom units and five one-bedroom, one-bathroom units.
Spencer Park received an additional eight two-bedroom, one-bathroom units.
All 16 homes have been built to Silver Level Livable Housing standards, ensuring accessibility and adaptability for residents.
Housing Minister John Carey emphasised the importance of this development, stating: “Another 16 new social homes in Albany will bolster the supply of safe, secure and affordable housing to the most vulnerable members of the Albany community.”
He added that the government has added more than 2,600 social homes statewide, with over 1,000 more currently under contract or construction.
The new homes are part of the WA government’s record $4.5 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.
This initiative aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing across Western Australia.
Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens praised the project, calling it “a tremendous outcome for the Albany community.”
She highlighted the involvement of local contractors in the design and construction process, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting both housing needs and local businesses.
As the allocation process begins for people on the public housing waiting list, these new homes represent a tangible step towards addressing housing affordability and accessibility in regional Western Australia.
