The University of South Australia (UniSA) has unveiled a groundbreaking virtual reality platform that is transforming construction education.
The SiteSeer program allows architecture and construction students to safely explore building sites and connect theory to practice in an immersive digital environment.
Developed by UniSA academics, SiteSeer creates a realistic, first-person perspective of construction sites, similar to a video game.
Students can experience the full fabrication process and learn to translate 2D plans into 3D structures, bridging the gap between design and reality.
Dr Sean Pickersgill, Senior Lecturer in Architecture at UniSA, explains that the gamified platform was created to address logistical challenges associated with physical site visits.
“Organising physical site visits for students is challenging because there’s no way to ensure that all students receive the same experience,” he says.
The program evolved from an earlier version called OnSite, which was developed in 2015.
The latest iteration, SiteSeer, includes over 70 distinct phases of the construction process for a small, double-storey studio.
It achieves a high level of simulated realism, featuring detailed elements such as bins, vegetation, and tools.
Since its inception, more than 1,000 first-year students have engaged with the platform as part of an introductory course on Australian construction practices.
Dr Pickersgill emphasises that while tertiary architecture and building degrees face challenges in providing first-hand experience due to time constraints, this foundational knowledge is critical.
The SiteSeer program not only enhances learning opportunities but also addresses safety concerns and accessibility issues associated with physical site visits.
It allows students to explore every detail of the construction environment and gain in-depth insights into each building stage within a seamless platform.
As construction education continues to evolve in the digital age, innovative tools like SiteSeer are paving the way for more comprehensive, accessible, and engaging learning experiences for future architects and construction professionals.
