Critically acclaimed American architecture firm Studio Gang has just announced their first project in Canada. Named One Delisle, it is a geometric-looking residential tower that is not like anything you’ve ever seen before.
The Toronto building will be 48 floors above ground, and consist of approximately 263 apartments, spanning a height of 158 m tall.
“Located at an important node in Toronto and anchoring the corner of a full-block development, [One Delisle] provides much-needed density on a compact footprint, growing its neighbourhood upward to meet urban challenges and benefit the city while remaining sensitive to its context amid new open park space,” commented Studio Gang.
On behalf of client Slate Asset Management, the tower’s distinctive façade comprises a series of eight-storey elements, all spiralling up the building. Balconies in One Delisle are set to have striking greenery and terraces designed on top of them. The tower’s angled, alternating geometry allows for variously sized floor plates that result in unique conditions within the units, bringing a diversity of residential options to the mixed-use neighbourhood.
One Delisle was designed to respond to its surrounding streetscape. The tower is straight at the base to fit within the city’s grid, and as the building levels rise, the tower intends to ‘twist’ and transform into a multifaceted cylindrical shape, designed to fully capture expanded views, further apprehending as much sunlight as possible, whilst minimising shadows on the street.
According to Studio Gang, the existing architecture of the neighbourhood was a great inspiration for preserving the tower’s main street character.
One Delisle tower is still in very early stages but is anticipated to be completed by 2023.
